4.Thorns on the road

In 1996, a reporter of the People's Daily came to Mo Shuzhen’s clinic. She said: "Twenty years ago, I interviewed a doctor for male infertility in Guizhou Zunyi and reported him in the People's Daily. An Arabian prince came to him for treatment after he read the newspaper because he had infertility for some years after marriage. And later he recovered in normal reproduction after treatment. There followed the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries.” A doctor promoted the friendship between the two countries. It made a deep impression in Mo Shuzhen’s mind.

In the range of diagnosis and treatment of Dr. Mo Shuzhen, there were various kinds of people in different fields, only except such as the wife of president. She thought the reason was that her reputation was not spread far, not because of her medical skill was not high enough. After struggling for more than two years in the capital, Beijing, she deeply realized, to make her career bigger, she must make her reputation spread far first.

After a few days, a fat woman came to the clinic. Her face was like a full moon and her back was big and thick. She said that she was introduced by a reporter of famous newspaper to come here for the treatment of her gynecological disease. She gave to Dr. Mo Shuzhen her name card saying “Hong Kong Business Planning Center, Chairman of China Party”. She said she was specializing in the propagandization of famous persons and her work was very successful in effect.

She talked about the plan of Chinese herbal medicine treatment of infertility on going to the world, she said she had many friends in the field of news media, and she said she would make the propagation about Dr. Mo in both domestic and abroad newspapers, she said her reports would be published in  People's Daily, Reference News, Hong Kong Ta Kung Pao, Wenhui Daily, and the newspapers of Malaysia, Singapore, the United States, Japan, and so on, and she said she ensured there would be effect within one month. 

Finally, she said she would try her best to help Mo Shuzhen to walk out of the difficult condition, she proposed to report the news first in the domestic and Hong Kong newspapers, but 30 thousand Yuan should be given to her now. She vowed so solemnly that Dr. Mo Shuzhen believed her and gave her 30 thousand Yuan without letting her make any written evidence of it.

A few days later, the fat woman would like to invite friends to dinner. In Yucihuang Restaurant, a group of people came on invitation. When she gave gift to friends, Mo Shuzhen was asked to keep away from seeing it. Afterwards, nobody knew she was really gave gifts to people or not. The expense for that one meal was 3200 Yuan.

A few days later, she came again, and said that in the thirty thousand Yuan the last time gave to her there was a one hundred-Yuan bill less. Mo Shuzhen was greatly surprised, why this woman did so, for invitation people for dinner I spent more than three thousand Yuan, I took the money from the bank, could it be said that I took one bill out from the whole bundle? Dr. Mo was very upset in the mind. The fat woman said she’d like to make report in both domestic and foreign newspapers at the same time, and a second thirty thousand Yuan should be given to her. 

Originally Dr. Mo didn’t want to give her the second time, and the younger sister Mo Shuyu said that the second time could be given to her when she fulfilled the report and made it in the newspaper already. Dr. Mo asked her younger brother Mo Hongping did a divination on it. Mo Hongping graduated from Hunan University of Chinese Medicine. He came to Beijing together with her sisters. He acted as an assistant of Dr. Mo Shuzhen. Just now he seriously divined and said: no problem, threatening but not dangerous. In this way, Dr. Mo gave her thirty thousand Yuan once again. The fat woman checked the money again and again and put into her handbag and left.

Oh, for a beautiful lie, Mo Shuzhen paid two years’ efforts, once again breaking the bank. The huge frustration almost defeated Mo Shuzhen down to the ground. She was seriously ill.

The younger sister, Mo Shuyu, decided to go back to Hunan, the hometown, to start her own business in order to reduce Mo Shuzhen’s  burden and to find her own blue sky for career. 

On August 5, 1996, the whole family of younger sister, Mo Shuyu, went back to Xiangxi by plane. On that day in the morning, it was raining, just like the tears of sisters. 

That year in summer, thunderstorms were particularly heavy, almost destroyed the courtyard where Dr. Mo Shuzhen lived. Just like all of the disasters pouring down from the top of the head, Mo Shuzhen was not able to endure this much blows.

The son, Yanger, went back to Xiangxi too. Stayed in the dark and damp courtyard along, Mo Shuzhen, in the mind, suffered from the loneliness and sorrows.

It was in this rainy summer, from Hubei, a couple, both the husband and wife, not young in age, came to Dr. Mo’s clinic. They had a son, who died the year before last. He passed the examinations for Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics. Just a few days before he came to Beijing, he acted bravely for helping a girl who was kidnapped by the two rogues, but finally he was killed because he was outnumbered.

The pain of losing their son was so unbearable that they decided to have another child in order to soothe the wound in heart and mind. The wife had an operation of salpingostomy for opening the fallopian tube. But in the past two years, she was still not pregnant. Age waited for no man. So their mental pressure was extremely heavy.

Facing this poor mother, Mo Shuzhen said: " You are the hero's mother,  I will do my best for you, to make a good son to you.” The couple was very grateful. They gave many gifts and some photos to Dr. Mo Shuzhen for memory when they left Beijing. 

Let the hero son come back to his mother's arms. This became a common wish of Dr. Mo Shuzhen and this patient couple.

In those dark days, there were occasionally some joys, like a bright light, lightening Mo Shuzhen’s life.

It was a Saturday, a middle-aged woman in dignified dresses came with her husband and her son of five months by car to Mo Shuzhen’s clinic. They came for saying thanks to Mo Shuzhen. On entering into the clinic, he opened a silk banner, on which, it said: To respectful Dr. Mo Shuzhen for sending a son to me with proficient medical skills. 

Looking at this middle-aged couple who were with happiness on their faces, looking at their healthy baby in the mother’s arms, Mo Shuzhen also laughed with happiness, once again she realized the meaning of her work and the meaning of her life. She remembered this couple. They married 16 years but without kids. In the United States, they had treatment in the hospital devoutly for three years, but without effect at all. After returning back to China, they visited all of the big hospitals in Beijing, but still failed to have the good effect.

On hearing the story of Dr. Mo Shuzhen, they came to ask for help with only a little hope. In that year, the wife was already more than 40 years old. She doubted: "I've been treated by so many famous doctors and hospitals, how can Mo’s herbal medicines help?"

The diagnosis conclusion of this lady was "primary infertility, ovarian cyst in the right side ovary". Her family relatives were gynecology and obstetrics doctors of western medicine. They suggested she should have surgical treatment.

After reading the medical history of this patient, Mo Shuzhen put forward her own opinion: this patient was relatively old in age, if she had an operation, within one or two years her reproductive function recovery was not good enough, it would be delaying the time. Women who have only one ovarian could also be pregnant. It was not necessary for her to do the operation first.

The dream of two sisters-in-law has come true, the whole family was extremely happy about it. After saying thanks solemnly, they left by their car for home with the joy of whole family.

A few days later, another Beijing woman, 40 years old, came to Mo Shuzhen’s clinic and gave some photos of her daughter as gift for Dr. Mo. Looking at the baby’s sweet smile, Mo Shuzhen remembered the condition of this patient. 

She married five years but without pregnancy. She had oligomenorrhea and this pathological condition lasted for eight years, tortured her eight years. Like an ant on a hot pan, she visited big and small hospitals all day long with a deeply worried uneasy mood. The final result was still a failure in pregnancy.

Then she went to a famous Beijing hospital, her laparoscopy showed that the thickness of fallopian tube was uneven, there was uterine fibroids, ovarian atrophy in one side, and partial ovarian atrophy in the other side. She was almost completely disappointed when she was told the news. Coming to see Dr. Mo Shuzhen, she was so depressed with a gaunt face, and despaired expression.   

Listened to her pathological condition, Mo Shuzhen, who had seen thousands of complicated cases of infertility, also felt that her head was getting bigger. But Dr. Mo Shuzhen calmly advised the patient to be at ease and made an analysis of her pathological condition for the patient. What she suggested was that the patient should use the herbs to treat the inflammation first for getting the function of fallopian tube recovered, and then the uterus and ovaries should be nourished and the endocrine should be regulated for promoting the ovulation.

The patient was still very nervous, every day she took her basal body temperature. On each visit, she always said what her body temperature was yesterday and how it was today and so on. Mo Shuzhen found she was too nervous to get it done. Dr. Mo asked her not to take temperature any more, pregnancy was a very natural thing, there was no need to be worry about it, and nervousness could only make it failed.
