Well known in Beijing From Ye Xin’s "Xiangxi Prodigy Lady Mo Shu-zhen" | |
On December 3, 1997, the program "Wonders in Medical Field" of the Beijing TV Station presented in the prime time the topic program on Mo Shu-zhen “A Xiangxi Lady Doctor Treats Infertility”. That night, the telephone operators of China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences complained that they could not sleep for the whole night, the phone calls came one after another, and all of them were asking for the phone member of Dr. Mo Shu-zhen’ office.
On the second day in the morning, a lot of people stood in front of clinic, waiting for seeing Dr. Mo Shu-zhen for treatment of infertility. It seemed they forgot the severe winter cold, very early in the morning, even in the midnight at two o 'clock, they started here waiting in line for registration.
On December 6 to 8, it was planned that Beijing TV station carried out the free medical consultation activities for 3 days in the 66400 Army Hospital near Five-Hole Bridge in Haidian District. In the early morning of December 6, more than 20 patients arrived at the clinic of China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences. The leader of the clinic would not let Dr. Mo Shu-zhen go, but many many patients were waiting for her in Haidian Army Hospital already.
Mr. Zhang Jiang of Beijing TV station was very angry. He called Mo Shu-zhen and said: "Mo Shu-zhen, if you still don't come, I’ll fire you." After a while, another director of Beijing TV station called again, “Dr. Mo, you come quickly please. Here there are more than one hundred and eighty people in line waiting for you. They are disputing now. If you don't come, they’ll be in violence. We now dare not go out of the room." Hearing about this, Mo Shu-zhen was also worried. She hurried up, getting prepared to go. Her two brothers, Mo Hong-chun and Mo Hong-ping, and the assistant Dr. Meng, started to go by the car of a patient, rushing to the Army Hospital near Five-Hole Bridge.
When they arrived, they saw a lot of patients crowded in the room, in the corridor, and in the courtyard of the hospital waiting for Dr. Mo. Patients said: "Yesterday at night it was snowing, we arrived at two o 'clock." Mo Shu-zhen had no time for talking, with a slight preparation, she began to see patients. Outside the window, many people said: "Dr. Mo, would you please see us first!" Two younger brothers hurriedly closed the window. Mo Hong-ping later joked: "I want to jump down from the window for escape at that time."
From morning till night, there was no a single moment for break, even no time for going to the toilet. Within one day, Dr. Mo received 60 patients. Three days in succession, she finished the treatment for all of them. Then, still some people came for asking for information. The leader of the army hospital said, three days for the free medical consultation activities was over, we dare not let more patients come. Later for many days, they had to explain again and again to patients: “Dr. Mo is not coming here!” Otherwise, it was difficult for them to hold the situation.
This was the first upsurge since Mo Shu-zhen arrived in Beijing several years. People said, it's a fierce wind in the field of infertility that made by Mo Shu-zhen.
Three days later, Mo Shu-zhen came back to the clinic of China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences. Every day there were 70~80 patients waiting for visiting Dr. Mo Shu-zhen for treatment. The telephone in the clinic was all the time busy. Some people waited for five days, but still not yet got the chance to see Dr. Mo. They had to ask for help from the friends in China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences for seeking the chance from the back door.
Dr. Mo Shu-zhen was very busy with her patients. Every day with the help of 3 assistants, she could finish the work late in the evening. She was too tired. She got insomnia. Outside it was so cold, incredibly people were waiting for her at the night of winter, thus she was more anxious, for the whole night she could not fall asleep.
It was an extraordinary overdraft of physical strength for Dr. Mo and her brothers. One of the younger brothers, Mo Hong-chun, was faint, and the other one, Mo Hong-ping, became very skinny and very weak. Mo Shu-zhen’s eyes became green black, so her brothers made fun of her as “You, the wolf coming!”
Mo Shu-zhen asked patients: "I came to Beijing several years, why you didn't come to see me earlier? Now you come to crowd with others.” The patients said: “Ow! Dr. Mo, we are looking for the doctor like you, why don't you show on TV earlier? We don't know you! We’d come earlier if we know you earlier”. Originally, Mo Shu-zhen thought: Peking people had a good living condition, so it was no matter for them to have a child. But many patients told Dr. Mo that the appointment for test-tube baby operation in Peking University Third Hospital was made for two years later already.
It was since then, Mo Shu-zhen became well-known in Beijing.
In October 1997, the daughter of a director of China Central Television (CCTV) came for treatment, attracted by Dr. Mo's fame. They talked for a long time. After going back, she told her father about Mo Shu-zhen’s story. Her father said: "We can make a topic movie of her. It’ll do good for people!”
Two days later, the reporter Zhao Yan came to interview for making a documentary film. Zhao Yan was tall and beautiful, at the same age with Mo Shu-zhen. They became good friends. After reading Mo Shu-zhen’s autobiography "On the way I go alone”, she said: "Every body in our family is very touched". She planned to take this autobiography as the basis to create a lady protagonist Mo Shu-zhen who was full of emotions and personality charm. Unfortunately, Mo Shu-zhen was congenitally unable to make performance. She was very nervous whenever to be in front of camera lens. But she would be immediately in high spirit when the camera was put down.
Many times, Zhao Yan advised her: "Don't worry, don’t be nervous. We'll be getting familiar with more time."
Zhao Yan’s daughter was less than one year old, she needed to take care of her daughter. But she stayed here all the time even weekend. She went to Beijing's suburbs, Tianjin Grand Harbour Oilfield, and so on for making interviews. Her professional dedication, make Mo Shu-zhen deeply moved.
In order to make the documentary more authenticity, in January 1998, on the Spring Festival eve, Mo Shu-zhen and television crew Zhao Yan and Geng Hua-dong went together to Xiangxi, returned to her hometown after four years’ leave.
It was a severe cold season in Xiangxi. The bus was running on the muddy winding road in the mountains. Zhao Yan and her colleagues, bringing their machines, were in impassivity, while Mo Shu-zhen was extremely of nervousness. When they got off the bus, they immediately set up camera machines and followed Mo Shu-zhen for working. Originally she saved for years the hometown passion, but the machine chased it away. There was only dull and nervous left in documentary film.
When she left home four years ago, the grandmother was always in good health. Due to excessive missing, she was already in a condition of confusion, now she could not recognize Mo Shu-zhen.
Heshui county was a small town with more than one hundred families in it. Today, it was full of Chinese New Year atmosphere everywhere. The air was filled with the smell of firecrackers. In the central room, Mo Shu-zhen, Zhao Yan, and Geng Hua-dong were sitting in a circle around the charcoal fire. The grandmother asked: "Who is Zhen-er?" Everyone laughed, Mo Shu-zhen said: "Grandma, I am Zhen-er."
Many people, including neighbors and those were used to be the patients of Mo Shu-zhen’s grandmother and mother, came for filming. In the cold wind, people praised the magical power of herbal medicines of Mo’s family. When the camera faced toward the grandmother, she said: "Our medicine is very good, you want to have a son you’ll get a son, you want to have a daughter you’ll get a daughter. For several generations, it was very effective.” Looking at the grandmother’s old appearance, Mo Shu-zhen could not control her tears, she cried, the whole family cried. The whole family cherished Mo Shu-zhen as the apple of the eye, but she could only bring endless worries to this family.
Two days later, the CCTV reporters left for Beijing.
On April 18, 1998, The Documentary of CCTV broadcasted "Songzi Guanyin Mo Shu-zhen (Dr. Mo Treats Infertility Families)", in which, Dr. Mo Shu-zhen’s achievement in treating infertility was highly appreciated.
After this program, an upsurge of looking for Songzi Guanyin was formed in the whole country of China. CCTV had to set up an office and specially assign persons to answer the phone calls and letters of the patients from all parts of the country.
In the capital Beijing, Mo Shu-zhen’s career was booming, like the sun in broad daylight.
