Hospital is a strange place, it is a battlefield in which an angel and disease struggle with each other. Although without sword fighting, the life and death are struggling in every minute and second, just like a magic magnetic field, full of knowledge, novelty, adventures, and irritations in it, therefore it is more challenging.
Mo Shuzhen was assigned to the department of infectious diseases to work with the resident doctors Yin Daqing, Hu Zhongwei, Zhang Shulian, and Xiong Sujun, and the nurses Shi Xiuying, Yang Lan, He Xiaoqin, XiaoJigong, Fang Fang, Cai Ying, Wu Meihua, and Zhang Xiuju. The head nurse was a free and easy and efficient woman, people called her as "Zhuang Yi".
Zhuang Yi said she was graduated from nursing school, assigned to work in the team of geological exploration. After working in the deep mountains for two years, she was sent to Luxi County Hospital to work as a nurse.
"Cultural Revolution" started in 1966. Zhuang Yi was sent to work in Heshui Commune Hospital because of her husband’s family’s background problem.
All the year round, Zhuang Yi carrying a medicine cabinet worked for the people of Heshui, walked from mountain to mountain and from river to rever, made a great contribution to the health of local people.
Her daughter Zheng Xiaying was Mo Shuzhen’s high school classmate. They were good friends, they helped each other.
Girls were beautiful white swans, however, Mo Shuzhen was an "ugly duck”. Wearing a large white coat didn’t make Mo Shuzhen look better. The general head nurse of the hospital, looking at her, said: “You, fortunately, is not my daughter”. Everybody knew that her daughter was beautiful. Mo Shuzhen immediately said: "If you have a daughter like me, you will be lucky." Zhuang Yi laughed: "Mo Shuzhen is really a speaker."
There were thirty-six beds, five serious cases and one critical patient in this department. A tuberculosis patient was admitted into the hospital for a long time. He was a retired worker of bank. He had hemoptysis. Every 30 minutes his blood pressure and pulse should be taken and sputum suction should be done in time to protect the respiratory tract from obstruction. His wife and children took turns to take care of him. Struggling with the disease, doctors and nurses saved the dying patient from the death again and again.
One day in the afternoon, he had haemoptysis again. Zhuang Yi reported to the doctor and took the measures for rescue at once, including intravenous infusion, oxygen inhalation, and so on. After a while, his haemoptysis stopped. Because his family people was not here, Zhuang Yi asked Mo Shuzhen to clean the spittoon. Looking at the dirty spittoon with dark red blood in it, Mo Shuzhen didn’t want to do it. Finally Zhuang Yi cleaned the spittoon.
When getting off work, the nurse Shi Xiuying said to Mo Shuzhen with teasing: "Well, the head nurse asked you to do but you don’t it." Mo Shuzhen smiled helplessly. She told the story happened in last summer...
Last year in summer, in the infectious department a patient died of severe hepatitis. There was no people of his family coming for making arrangements for funeral because his wife died already. The hospital informed his unit. But three days later people of his unit came. The weather was hot at that time. The dead body went bad. The people of his unit dared not to look at him. It was Zhuang Yi and other two nursing workers managed the body for sterilization and package.
After taking the body away, they sterilized the morgue again.
Nurses admired the sense of responsibility and courage of the head nurse.
Zhuang Yi was a model of nurses. Compared with her, Mo Shuzhen felt ashamed of herself.
Day and night, Mo Shuzhen and other nurses took care of the patients all the time. They would report to doctor if the patients had something special.
When they were in a little free time, the nurses would make cotton swabs.
Between the buildings of infectious department and outpatient department, there was a large pool. Surrounding the pool, there were maples and willows. When breeze blowing, willow branches were swaying softly, and maples opened the green leaves, vibrant, stubbornly showing the beautiful spring.
Mo Shuzhen was on night duty again. After she toured the ward, it was already midnight. Because there were no critically ill patients, the doctor on duty went back to the Doctor Office for rest. Spring days, like a child's face, the weather changed quickly. After a while, along with the thunders and lightning, the heavy rain started. Outside the window, the leaves and the raindrops were noisy. The electricity stopped. Mo Shuzhen hurriedly found candles and ignited. The rain got lighter gradually, like a lullaby, making Mo Shuzhen sleepy. In dim candle lights, she fell asleep.
Nobody knew how long the time was. She heard a voice: "Asleep?" With a quiver, she woke up, she saw a deeply concerned face, a pair of bright eyes. Ah, it was the President Hou.
Mo Shuzhen’s face "shua" became red, her heart jumped, waiting for his blames. But the President softly asked about her work situation, adapted or not to the environment here, just like having a chit-chat with you.
Then, a toxic dysentery patient was carried in from the outpatient department. Mo Shuzhen went immediately to the doctor office to call Dr. Xiong. Both President Hou and Dr. Xiong diagnosed the patient and prescribed the medicines. Mo Shuzhen immediately gave antibiotics through intravenous infusion according to doctor’s order. When the patient’s condition became stable, President Hou left.

President Hou and his wife graduated from Hunan Medical University. They were lovers when they studied in the university. In order to response to the call of the party, they came to work in the remote and isolated Xiangxi.
From the provincial capital to the sparsely populated county, there were too many differences. High mountains, far ways, sufferings of patients, and the same working destinations let them come closer and fall in love with each other.
In the morning, they were reading books together, in the evening, they were discussing medical records, ……
They were contributing their youth and wisdom in the hospital.
The in-patient department of this hospital was in a two-storied building. On the first floor, there were the departments of internal medicine, pediatrics, and infectious diseases; on the second floor, there were the departments of surgery, operating theatre, and gynecology and obstetrics.
In the early sixties, there were not enough doctors but two many patients in the hospital. Only one doctor was on duty at night, he had to go upstairs and downstairs to work for the patients. They were very tired but they had to insist on work.
No holiday, no rest, regardless of day and night, they worked silently, making a great contribution to the people of Xiangxi, Hunan province.
More than twenty years passed, they had a son and a daughter, they were attentively bringing their children's up.
"Heal the wounded and rescue the dying, practice revolutionary humanitarianism" is the responsibility of medical staff. Mo Shuzhen was often moved by these excellent doctors and nurses.
She was in the adolescence but she was sick. She had urination frequency and urgency problems since she was a child. As the burden of work was aggravating, her illness was getting worth. Nurses served patients all the time, so they had to wash hands very often. When using water, the conditional reflex made her urination more often. In the rainy days, the symptoms became worth. Fortunately, Zhuang Yi and other colleagues especially took care of her. They always helped her in the busy work when Mo Shuzhen was busy on the way to toilet.
Time was flying.
One day at noon time, in the chatting, people began to concern about her personal problems. Just at this time, she received a letter from the mail room of the hospital. Colleagues making a joke wanted to open it. Mo Shuzhen said magnanimously: "No problem, you open it."
The dormitory of staff was in the outpatient department building on the second floor. On the east side, there lived male doctors, on the west side there lived nurses, and at the end of corridor, there located the meeting room. In the evening, the TV program Huo Yuanjia in the meeting room was on. The vigorous soul-stirring song of the theme was on. Groups of people passed by in front of her room. She was lying in bed, thinking once again and again her boy friend and waiting for his knocking at the door. Many days, what came to her was always disappointment. Occasionally they gathered together on Saturday, but Sunday they had to separate for work again. Very often they quarreled. No romantic, no vows, her love was full of bitter.
There were a lot of chances in county, some men were obviously showing favor to her, but she was a very dedicated person for love, consistently treated with love.
People said: "People of our hospital are in good moral character with utter infatuation."
