Mystery of female infertility(1)
Mystery of female infertility(1)

In 1984, Mo Shu-zhen read a report in the newspaper HEALTH, saying that Prof. Xu Run-san in China-Japan Friendship Hospital treats infertility very well, so the red carpet of foreign President's wife has spread to the front of his office desk. This news gave Mo Shu-zhen a deep impression.
Similarly, in the early 80s, the president, Liu Ming-han, of Andropathy Hospital of Yuanling County of Hunan Province, treated male diseases very well, so he was very famous in China. The medias, including CCTV, Hunan TV, and newspapers and magazines reported him in details, brining the infertility couples to Yuanling County, to his hospital. Immediately, all beds of this hospital were occupied, all hotels of this county were occupied too. The small county was busy with receiving patients.
Mo Shu-zhen was deeply affected by these events. She got to know that in China there was a big population having infertility. Mo Shu-zhen followed her grandmother to collect herbal medicines in mountains ever since she was small. Those women who married for 10 or 20 years without pregnancy took one dose of the herbs the grandmother gave to them would have pregnancy. It was so simple, natural, and no hospitalization at all. After they got children, they came to tell the good news with a gift of some chicken eggs or bacon, Okay, everything was Okay.
Mo Shu-zhen began to collect the relevant newspapers and magazines dealing with the treatment of infertility. According to the medical statistics, in China, about ten percent of women of childbearing age were without the ability of fertility, in foreign countries, the incidence of infertility was as high as fifteen percent to twenty percent. Although the western medicine’s high-tech detection technology could find out the cause of infertility, their treatment was very seldom in achieving good results.
In July 1978, the world's first test-tube baby was born in Britain. The success of in-vitro fertilization (IVF) was the result of development of multi-disciplinary including reproductive medicine and embryos medicine, opening a new way for western medicine treating infertility. But in the early 80s, the success rate of treatment for infertility was very low, only ten to thirty percent, in the United States, it was thirty percent, in Britain, sixteen percent, and in China, about ten percent.
Many families in the world, which should be happy, because they had no children, were suffering from the pains or even hopelessness, many infertile women were discriminated because of infertility.
In 1984 the report of world health organization (WHO) pointed out: infertility is a major medical and social problem all over the world.
Mo Shu-zhen again reminded of the past. In the summer that year, in her hometown Heshui, a young couple coming to the commune government for divorce took the herbs the grandmother gave to them, the wife got pregnancy and gave birth to a child, later they came to tell the good news with a cock as a gift.
Another woman, had abortion for ten times, was scolded by her husband and mother-in-law, and she herself felt hopeless. Grandmother gave her several doses of herbs and asked her to take one dose after getting pregnancy. Ten months later, she gave birth to a cute son.
Such scenes were on and on in Mo Shu-zhen’s mind. Grandmother said: one year, 32 women from Mayang county came for taking the herbal medicine for treating infertility, there was only one of them not cured, the rest was successful in getting children.
Yes, Tujia medicine has a long history of treatment for infertility and habitual abortion. It is a Tujia people's experience accumulated in the long-term medical practice, through the generations, condensed the essence of traditional Chinese medicine. As the successor of the fourth generation of Mo’s family, Mo Shu-zhen was learning voraciously the knowledge of Tujia medicine, reading the books of Tujia customs and traditional medicine.
She was going to do it. After thinking twice, she went to see the president of the county hospital and said: “We open an infertility clinic, we’ll treat it with Xiangxi herbal medicines.”
Good things are a long time in coming. After years of efforts, Mo Shu-zhen treated infertility patients in her spare time and more than 30 patients were successfully pregnant after treatment. Some of them were just friends and relatives of doctors in the county hospital. With these first-hand information, Mo Shu-zhen reported it to the leaders of all levels in provincial and county science and technology commissions. The project was put for carrying out to the county hospital at last. Supported by the director general Wu Guang-hui, president Li Yong-nian, and deputy president Li Shi-you, the female infertility clinic was set up in the Luxi County People's Hospital in August 1989.
At the beginning, there were not many patients knowing the newly established clinic. So the difficult patients of obstetrics and gynecology department were introduced by the doctors of this hospital to the clinic for treatment. A sister of a nurse of the internal medicine department, who was 53 years old, was suffering from uterine fibroids. She had uterine bleeding. With treatment of western medicine, her hemoglobin decreased to 4 grams. Western medicine doctors suggested her have operation to remove the uterus. After using the herbal medicines gave by Dr. Mo Shu-zhen for 9 days, her bleeding was stopped. Considering that the uterus would be gradually atrophic in postmenopausal stage, the uterus myoma would also slowly shrink, there was no need to operate for the removal of uterus. The patient was very happy about avoiding the pain of operation. For thanking Dr. Mo, the sisters gave some noodles for lunch as gift.
In the same period, there were other three women suffering from uterus massive hemorrhage cured after treatment with Xiangxi herbal medicines.
Many women had lumbago after using contraceptive ring and their menstruation became irregular. Endometritis was induced finally. Three doses for each of them, they were cured. Thus these herbs with the functions of clearing heat and removing toxins became medicines for gynaecological health-keeping.
Along with the gradual increase of patients, Xiangxi newspaper UNITY published the message. The editor of magazine SNOW PEAK, Huaihua, Hunan Province, Hu Ke, interviewed Dr. Mo Shu-zhen, and then Hou Zi-jia, the chairman of the culture federation of Luxi County, and Xu Zhu-shuang and Yang Qing-hao, the members of the culture federation wrote the article Revealing the mystery of female infertility, which was later published in SNOW PEAK. It made the Yuanling Andropathy Hospital of the neighbour county nearby excited.
People read this magazine and told the news to friends and relatives.  Originally in that hospital most of the infertility patients were females, they came to Mo’s clinic all together.
Later, Hunan Women Newspaper interviewed Mo Shu-zhen again and reported with the whole page, and predicted that: Mo Shu-zhen will win the garland of success!
Patients from Guizhou, Guangxi, Shandong, Zhejiang, plus the local patients, carried their hearts of eagerly seeking for treatment and their hardships of seeking for successful treatment up to Mo Shu-zhen. Mo Shu-zhen felt a heavy duty on shoulder and a long way to go for treating such patients.
Half a year later, the clinic was crowded with patients every day. Twenty to thirty infertility couples were in line, waiting for treatment. Twenty to thirty letters should be answered. In the evening after dinner, patients came to talk. A large group of people sat in the room, talking with each other, till ten o 'clock. Only after one o 'clock at night, Dr. Mo could begin to take rest.
Very often, before getting up in the morning on Sunday, the patients coming from different places began to knock at the door, they said they came by train and arrived just now. If they saw Dr. Mo is at home and then they would be at ease to find a hotel to stay. Those who arrived in the evening would come to Mo Shu-zhen’s home and Mo showed them to hotel. When they came at meal times, they would like to sit down and drink a cup of wine together. Dr. Mo and the patients built up a deep friendship with each other.
The successful cases were increasing day by day. Mo Shu-zhen’s reputation then spread far gradually.
In a mountain village, there lived a family, three people in it, the couple and their mother. The man ploughed and the woman weaved. Their mother was widowed since she was more than 30 years old. She raised her son. She hoped to have grandson early, but her son married for 8 years without producing any children. Last year, her daughter-in-law had an abortion, then she was not pregnant anymore.
The daughter-in-law had treatment in the county hospital for three years, again in the provincial hospital for two years, took both Chinese medicine and western medicine. All the money they borrowed from the relatives and friends were spent on treatment, but useless. The mother died because she worried extremely. The son felt unfilial to his mother, cried nearly to death.
Later they got to know Mo Shu-zhen from Hunan Women's Newspaper, the couple was overjoyed, and came to Luxi People’s Hospital on December 8, 1989.
Mo Shuzhen asked about her history carefully, eight years ago she used to be pregnant for six months, and then abortion. Since then her menstrual flow was in large quantity and her dysmenorrhea was severe. The B type ultrasonic examination showed that her ovarian cyst of the left side was 74mm×40mm in size, and the fallopian tube was partially obstructed.
Treatment: reinforce the kidney yang, promote blood circulation to remove blood stasis, dissolve lumps, and regulate the menstruation to promote conception. With the herbal treatment for one month, her ovarian cyst disappeared, and she got pregnancy. The couple came to tell the good news: "When the first hospital told us I was pregnant, we don't believe, and went to the second hospital, the urine test is positive in result, then to the third hospital, the test was also positive in result, we just believed it. It’s really like in a dream!" The husband holding three test sheets in his hand was full of happiness on his face. They kneeled down to kowtow to their benefactor Mo Shu-zhen.
Later they got a son, very cute.
A patient named Zhang coming from Luxi county, more than 30 years old, married for five years but without pregnancy. This beautiful lady was an army soldier's wife. She visited many doctors and was treated with many different methods, but the effect was not good. She finally came to Mo Shu-zhen’s clinic. The B type ultrasonic examination reported that she had the uterine deformity “uterus duplex”. After herbal treatment for three months, she was pregnant. When she had threatened abortion, Dr. Mo treated her with herbs for fetus protection. At the full-term of pregnancy, she had cesarean section in the department of obstetrics and gynecology, Luxi County Hospital. Her daughter was born and the baby was in normal development.
Thereafter, there were several patients with uterus duplex cured in succession and they got children.
A 38-year-old women from Guangxi was unable to get pregnancy because of amenorrhoea. For this difficult disease Mo Shu-zhe was not confident, so she just prescribed 7 doses herbal medicines. This patient brought the herbal medicines home for treatment. Later another woman in her same village came for treatment, told Mo Shu-zhen: "That amenorrhea patient took seven doses herbal medicine and got pregnancy. Dr. Mo, you gave her medicine and told her it was difficult to treat. But she was incredibly conceived.” Mo Shu-zhen said it was really a miracle.
Mo Shu-zhen faced a new problem. Most of the infertility patients were diagnosed as fallopian tube obstruction, which was a modern disease, a worldwide difficult problem. In ancient time, one dose of herbal medicine could cure it. But in the ancient secret recipes of Tujia medicine, it was not mentioned at all. How to do for such patients?
Many of the patients coming from Yuanling Andropathy Hospital were the cases of fallopian tube obstruction. Faced to the patients with great desire for children, Mo Shu-zhen had to tell them the truth: “I don’t know how to treat this disease, my grandmother didn't teach me." The patients left with disappointment. Some patients said: "In order to treat this disease, we have sold our house." And some patients told Mo Shu-zhen: "Tomorrow there would be more than one hundred couples coming from Yuanling Andropathy Hospital for treatment of fallopian tube obstruction. Mo Shu-zhen hurriedly said: "You go back to tell them, I don’t know how to treat this disease, ask them don't come!"
