Dr. Mo Shu-zhen is a native of Xiangxi Tujia nationality, Hunan province. She is good at the treatment of female infertility, habitual abortion, and many other gynecological diseases. She was the director of infertility department, Luxi People's Hospital, Hunan province, doctor of infertility department of TCM Clinic of China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences, and now she is the director of infertility center of Beijing National Ethnic Hospital (Beijing Tibetan and Ethnic Medicine Hospital).

Dr. Mo Shu-zhen was born in a Xiangxi medical family. Mo’s family adopted natural herbal medicines collected from Xiangxi mountains to treat female infertility and habitual abortion for more than one hundred years. Its distinguished therapeutic effect won the praise of Chinese people from generation to generation. Mo Shu-zhen is the fourth generation successor of Tujia medicine of Mo’s Family.

Mo Shu-zhen’s maternal great-grandfather, Zhang Chang-hong, was a famous scholar in Xiangxi. He was versed in both literature and military affairs, and was proficient in medicine. Concentrated in studying the 12 classics of traditional medicine stored in home by his family, he learned widely from others' strong points and treated patients with good effect. So he was a famous doctor in the local region. At that time, he married for seven years but was still having no children. Later he visited many medical experts and followed the advise of them. He collected herbal medicines for seven days in the mountains and brought back to his wife for making decoction for treatment. Not long later his wife was pregnant and since then they had five children in succession.

Mo Shu-zhen’s grandmother, Zhang Wan-yu, was the youngest daughter of Zhang Chang-hong. She was an intelligent girl, deeply loved by her father, who handed down the secret recipe of the family to her. Zhang Wan-yu treated the patients for decades of years. Under the guidance of her father, she treated female diseases very successfully, being regarded as women's savior in Xiangxi, Hunan province.

In 1962, Mo Shu-zhen was born in such a doing-good family, influenced by what she constantly sees and hears, she was determined to follow the example set up by ancestors to help the patients coming out of the sufferings.

Mo Shu-zhen, starting from the age of 6, followed her grandmother to pick up the herbal medicines in mountains. Plants in the mountains gave her knowledge of treatment for patients and helped her weave a beautiful dream of life.

Mo Shu-zhen in 1981 graduated from the Health School of Tujia and Miao minorities, Xiangxi, Hunan province. In the same year, she was assigned to work in Luxi People's Hospital. In 1989, she founded the infertility department in this hospital.

Mo Shu-zhen’s predecessors treated infertility patients free of charge. After the patients were pregnant and got children, they came to say thanks and gave a pig leg or a chicken plus a pair of cloth shoes as gift.

In the 1990s, the oviduct obstruction of the infertility patients accounted for 60%. In ancient times, one dose of medicine managed infertility. In the modern time, Mo Shu-zhen faced new challenges.

Because of the pollution and iatrogenic infection, more and more patients got the oviduct obstruction. The oviduct is a pair of small pipes in the deep part of women’s body, about 8~14cm long, blood circulation is not rich in it, so the western medicine antibiotics aren’t reaching smoothly. That’s why the western medicine therapy isn’t effective. It becomes a worldwide difficult problem in the medical field.

There was no answer in the ancient secret recipe. Facing the group of patients coming from different parts of country, Mo Shu-zhen told them the truth: "Please go to see other doctors, I can't cure this disease."

Looking at the patients came with great hope but left with despair, Mo Shu-zhen’s heart was aching. Nobody knew where they should go for successful treatment. A few infertile couples resolutely stayed, without leaving, they said: "Dr. Mo, we went to hospitals all over the country, here is the last place. You just take us for experiment, try it. It doesn't matter if you could not cure us.” Mo Shu-zhen was very deeply touched by the honest patients. She knew it was a long way for her to go.

Western medicine treats the oviduct obstruction with antibacterial drugs. The ancient recipe of Chinese herbal medicine for inflammatory diseases of male and female reproductive organs were functioning to clear heat, remove toxins, activate blood, dissolve stasis, and remove obstruction of meridians and collaterals. She tried to use these kinds of herbal medicines for treatment. The result was that some of the patients got pregnancy after taking 7 doses or 1~3 months. Since then, the treatment was made as 3-month being a small course and 6-month being a big course. One day, nine patients with oviduct obstruction came from the nearby county for treatment. Eight of them were successfully cured and they got pregnancy. They acclaimed in the ward: "Mo Shu-zhen, long live!" That year, Mo Shu-zhen was 28 years old.

In 1990, Mo Shu-zhen successfully broke through the difficulty in the treatment of oviduct obstruction, obtained the widespread praise of Chinese and foreign patients.

In 1993, the scientific research project “The study on the treatment of female infertility with Chinese herbal medicines” was approved by the science and technology commission of Xiangxi autonomous region and received the affirmation of medical experts of all levels.

Until May 1994, Mo Shu-zhen treated more than 4000 patients with infertility and habitual abortion from all over the country. Of them, more than 2000 patients were cured and got pregnancy. Of their ages, the eldest was 49 years old, who married for 30 years.

In order to carry forward the motherland medicine, let Tujia medicine benefit humanity, Mo Shu-zhen was invited to treat patients by China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences, with the support of hometown leaders and related aspects.

Her reputation has spread throughout the United States, Canada, Britain, France, Japan and southeast Asian countries, and Hong Kong and Taiwan regions.

Many cured overseas patients wrote letters to report good news: "Dr. Mo, your Chinese herbal medicines are magical, doctors in the United States were surprised with their mouths agape." The Japanese said: "You can treat obstruction of the fallopian tubes, even the Japanese doctors were surprised." Austrian patients said: "The Austrian doctors feel incredible that you cure the obstruction of the fallopian tubes."

Human returns back to nature and Chinese herbal medicine has an immeasurable role for it. The incidence of infertility accounts for 10% to 20% in the world, and it gets rising year by year. Although the western medicine can rely on high-tech detection means to find out the cause, there is no effective drug treatment for it. Development to today, the highest science and technology in western medicine — IVF, has opened up a new way for western medicine treatment infertility, but its successful rate is very low, and what is more, expensive. It cannot satisfy patients’ desire of for children.

Tujia medicine treatment for infertility has a history of thousand years. With the condensed essence of traditional Chinese medicine and the civilization of Chinese nation of thousands of years, Tujia medicine has a wide prospect in the treatment of infertility.

Mo Shu-zhen came to Beijing for a purpose to promote Tujia medicine going abroad and to let the national medicine serve thousands of families in the world. This is the forever pursuit of Mo Shu-zhen, the fourth generation successor of Tujia medicine of Mo’s family.
